When my Alaska season is over and I’m forced back down into the lower 48, I spend October through May pursuing trophy brown trout on the Chattahoochee River near Atlanta, GA. The Chattahoochee River has arguably the strongest population of wild brown trout in the southeastern U.S. Yes, I said it, wild brown trout near Atlanta, GA. The tailwater below Buford Dam runs clean and cold year round with several tributary creeks along the entire 48 mile drainage. This creates near perfect conditions for brown trout reproduction as well as it provides a sustainable food source for growing leviathan brown trout.
Below is a picture of a brown trout caught in May of 2015. It measured 31″ length x 20″ girth. Using this formula- length X girth X girth / 690 = , it weighed 17.97 pounds.
The fish pictured below measured 27″ length X 18″ girth. Was a couple of years ago when I was a little younger, fatter and had a smaller beard. Using the formula, it weighed 12.68 pounds.
Despite the fact that the fish in the above pictures were caught out my my traditional drift boat, I now use a Hyde Power Drifter Jet Sled. This way, I can cover more water throughout the day and stay away from the crowds. Its comfortable, fast and very functional for trophy trout fishing for an entire 8 hour day.
Before you book this trip, you need to understand a few of the guidelines in regards to pursuing trophy brown trout.
Below is a List of Everything I Provide-
This may seem like heavy gear for trout. However, we are not fishing like we would for regular trout. We are using techniques not unlike some you might use to attract the apex predator fish in any environment. Anything less than the above mentioned gear is simply ineffective and most importantly, unfair to the fish itself.
Full Day Trophy Brown Trout Trip (8 hours)- $525 (includes grilled gourmet lunch)
Half Day Trophy Brown Trout Trip (4 hours)- $450
If you are not comfortable with all the guidelines of the Trophy Trip, I will be willing to do a standard day. The standard day would consist of taking an hour or so during a half day trip and a couple of hours during a full day for you to examine the methods I use for pursuing trophy browns. During the remainder of that standard day, we would use advanced techniques with 6 wt rods, smaller streamers and large nymphs to pursue some of the most beautifully colored brown trout in the south.
Full Day Standard Trout Trip (8hours) – $425 (includes grilled gourmet lunch)
Half Day Standard Trout Trip (4 hours) – $300
If you are just interested in learning how to improver your casting skills with sinking lines and heavy flies, I offer a 3 hour on the river casting lesson for $150 per person.
